State of Mind

Ulster University Photographic Society

Ends 19 January 2024

State of Mind is a representation of different mental health experiences. We aim to explore the full spectrum of human emotion.

We proposed to our society members the idea of photographing what mental health means to them; how it's not always just "depression" but is in fact much more fluid. With this we hope to break the stereotype of all mental health being portrayed negatively when there are many other aspects.

We aim to have a comment box in the middle of the gallery space where viewers will write how the exhibition makes them feel. This will be anonymous but at the end of each day we will display them on the wall to further emphasise and show the unspoken reactions to the work. This will cause the exhibition to constantly evolve through the audience.

We hope this exhibition will encourage viewers to not only interact with the work but to be a part of it. The experience will allow our society members a chance to express themselves in a professional setting, for what is likely the first time for many.

State of Mind helps to improve mental health by conveying the different characteristics of the human state of mind. This allows the audience to relate, reflect and react in a safe environment.
