Amalgamate

First of 5 projects within the series of art &… which looks at different permutations and interdisciplinary crossovers between art &craft; art &sound; art &coding; art &folklore and art &politics.
Painter Jane Rainey and ceramicist Nicola Drennan will work in PS² prior to the exhibition opening, using the time to create new pieces on site. The exhibition will allow the viewer to question the gap that is placed between fine art and craft and enquire if this gap is needed. Jane Rainey will improvise with the function of painting as something that hangs on a wall. She will create paintings that grow organically from the canvas and onto the wall and ground.
Nicola Drennan will show ceramics as a functional object by creating sculptural pieces that expresses form, shape and space.
‘Institutions and galleries put a large emphasis on the separation of fine art and fine and applied arts. We wish to blur these lines, question them and through research and collaboration present the audience with challenging innovative work that questions these ideals.’

About art &....

In this series of 3 projects, PS² will work with specialist practitioners, to curate a project and programme around their subject and the link between art and other practices.. Contemporary art crosses many traditional borders incorporating other disciplines like film, performance, theatre, music, animation, dance… Yet there still are distinctions and hierarchies: who mixes with whom and to what degree? And does this interdisciplinary collaboration really produce new outcomes, valuable for all 'professions' involved? The series initiates collaborations and presents examples and processes of fruitful projects, some will be in partnership with organisations and Festival i.e. NI Science Festival; Art&Design Festival; Ulster University; SARC, Queen’s University.
